Developing the Concept
In this stage, again, our consumers are an important means of gaining insight about whether we are on track for developing the best products that people want. We meet with our consumers to evaluate all ideas and suggestions. We also make sure we focus on our target consumers (say, mom, baby or men) and try to marry insights and understanding about the product idea and the product's potential end benefits. This is a very important step in determining if the product fully meets the needs and exceeds the expectations of our consumers.
Also at this stage, internal collaboration among Burt's Bees various teams is key to developing successful and desirable products. R&D, Brand Marketing and Packaging all meet to review the product idea and really flesh it out, sharing information around the idea, relevant studies and the proposition.
At this point, our R&D team starts to determine how we are going to develop a truly natural product using natural ingredients and processes. Through knowledge, research, and extensive testing, we ultimately create the product to be an effective formula with stated end benefits, but also meets our high Natural Standard. Most importantly, it meets the most important standard — a product that exceeds the expectations of our consumers.
